USING LINES & SHAPES FOR YOUR PHOTOS

USING LINES & SHAPES IN YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY

Photos are about an individuals likes and dislikes, but there are key rules of photo composition that can help build a foundation of an interesting photo that you can print on canvas. One of the key elements to look for when creating a photo is  'lines and different shapes’. It is helpful to train yourself to look for lines and shapes. They can be a powerful element that can lead to a significant impact on your image. It can be helpful to add lines and shapes to add mood and atmosphere to your finished product or creating a desired effect. They can be useful in leading the eyes from one part to another or leading the eye to a particular part of your image or another part.

Using lines and shapes takes a little practice and it is often helpful to go back through previous photos you have taken to see what has worked and what hasn't worked. Have a look for vertical lines, horizontal lines, shapes and diagonal lines. Using these rules will add to your finished print.

Horizontal Lines

Horizontal lines can be powerful in creating photos that are tranquil. They can have the ability to convey restfulness and stability. An example of this may be a foal sleeping in flowers. The most common horizontal lines to be found in photographs are generally horizons,  but be careful not to run the horizon directly through the centre of the photograph dividing the equal amounts of the sky and landscapes. This may often have a negative effect and could create a dull image. This is not always case. A great practice to select the more impressive part of your scene, for example sunsets with interesting clouds. Also keep in mind that broken horizons may lead to a dull feeling photograph.

Look for layers of horizontal lines to add rhythm to your picture, for example layers of rolling waves. The rhythm can than become the focus or subject of the picture itself.

Another good tip when using horizontal lines is to try it to try to keep the lines square with the edges of you frame and to also shoot your image in a horizontal format. Adding horizontal lines into your image can really make a difference to how your photo on canvas will feel .

Vertical Lines

Vertical lines can convey various different moods from grandeur and dignity to rigidity. Objects such as buildings and skyscrapers represent horizontal lines. Combined with horizontal lines they can create a strong and dynamic picture. . If you really want to emphasize the power of the vertical line, try taking your photos in a vertical plane. Although, with photography this is only a guide. If you want the lines to appear as if they are bursting out of the top of the image, it then becomes useful to leave your camera in a horizontal format. Take your photo so that the lines move from the top to the bottom of your photo.

Using Diagonal Lines

Diagonal lines that are used in your photo are often considered the most interesting. They are representative of movement and speed. They can lead you into the frame of the photo and to the centre of interest. A good trick is to avoid splitting the frame of your image in two by running diagonal lines from one corner of the picture to the other. This can cause the image to lose it' s drive. To achieve a more balanced image within the confines of your frame try to create a diagonal that starts just to one side of the corner and continues to the one side of the opposite corner. Using curved lines within your frame can also be representative of moods such as grace and dignity.

If you really want to add an interest to your finished photo print look for different ways to incorporate interesting diagonal lines into your image. Remembering the different moods and feelings that they can convey.

Shapes

Shapes are basic two dimensional elements in the composition of your photos. You can use different shapes to achieve different moods within your picture. Shapes can include anything from odd numbers to triangles to create interesting photographic geometry. Shapes such as squares and rectangle can be less interesting as they basically mirror the frame of the image, so it lacks interesting conflict. To make them more creative use them with diagonals and triangles to create a more dynamic image. Placing a shape against a contrasting background and make them more interesting for example a white yacht sail against a dark and moody sky. A wonderful use of shapes are also silhouettes. The use of curved lines or circles and straight lines has a great ability to create tension in your frame.

Conclusion

Shapes and lines can add a very dynamic and interesting element to you photo composition, so next time you have your camera out keep in mind these basic rules. To find out about printing your photo to canvas visit Canvas Prints Online.

Compare Digital Cameras for the Best Price

Photography is a popular pastime of many an enthusiast all over the world.  It is not only a pastime of several people, but also a career of a lot of people.  From the time creation of the camera, it has been that way. With the passage of time, the technology has advanced in leaps and bounds and various types of cameras have been invented and produced. Digital camera is one such camera.  It is worthwhile to compare digital cameras if you really got to buy one.

Internet is full of websites that advertise sale of digital cameras.  These websites have almost all the information concerning them, i.e. service manuals, specification sheets, price comparisons, list of shops where cameras are available, user reviews, digital camera ratings and what not.  If you’re not a camera buff, the most prudent thing to do, without any doubt, is to consult these websites for a compare digital cameras exercise before physically purchasing one.

There are several points to be weighed in advance of buying a digital camera.  Among the many qualities that make a digital camera always stand out from the crowd are optical quality, zoom and storage media. If you have any misgivings concerning those qualities, why don’t you compare digital cameras on a site that hosts evaluations carried out by various sources.  It is truly useful to be in the know about those mechanics.

I have also seen that some websites have streamlined the comparison of various types of cameras with the comparison charts installed on those sites. All you have to do is to define your criteria and click the ‘compare’ button.  Within seconds, a comparison chart with all the relevant data will appear on your screen. See how easy it is to compare digital cameras in order to make an intelligent buy.

Once you have carried out an evaluation of digital cameras on a suitable site, you will be surprised at how ingenuous it has become. I observed in one website a listing of around 50 items in a digital camera being evaluated. It is virtually impossible to do such a comparison without such advanced online technology.. So, having considered the above-noted information, it is most excellent to look for a first-rate website on which you can compare digital cameras so as to avoid post-purchase compunction of your latest digital camera.

Cheap Digital Cameras

Capturing life’s passing moments was considered a luxury or a troublesome task in the past. Photography seemed a painstaking process that required specialist expertise or complicated equipment. The convergence of Information Technology with imaging has made the concept of real digital imaging a reality. Images that were previously recorded on film can now be stored in bits and bytes to be viewed anytime anywhere. The emergence of the digital camera has changed the way photography is being viewed the world over.

Highly innovative organizations such as Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Kodak and many others who have been highly acclaimed brands when it comes to photography, introduced and continuously reinvented the digital camera and its functionality to a wide range of photographers. These organizations have ensured that they produce digital cameras that can be used by a wide spectrum of photographers. While they have developed high quality feature rich solutions for professional photographers, they have also come up with low cost solutions for domestic users who simply want to capture the moment.

These low cost solutions have provided the opportunity for many users both great and small the world over to experience true digital imaging at a very reasonable price. Cheap digital cameras have given these users the opportunity to click away to their hearts content and cherish these moments for a life time.

The quality of pictures taken using cheap digital cameras may not be as high as expected by a professional, but they more than meet the expectations of an amateur user. The images captured by cheap digital cameras will usually be of a lower definition. The ability to maneuver the quality of the picture are also usually limited on cheaper digital cameras. Advanced options such as face recognition and preset scene modes are generally not available on lower cost digital cameras. The resolution of cheap digital cameras is often lower, resulting in the quality of the image being significantly lower.

Professionals will prefer to steer clear of cheap digital cameras because of the lack of flexibility to take the picture to their level of satisfaction. Cheap digital cameras will also be less robust and durable. Photographers looking for quality, longevity and durability in their cameras will be likely to veer away from these low cost digital cameras.

Cheap digital cameras while not catering to the needs of professionals will often be more than satisfactory to beginners who are looking for a cheap solution to capture their memories and make them last a lifetime.

Proper Lighting In Photography

With a good video camera, film or digital camera it is possible to produce professional quality photos of products, family, friends and yourself.Accomplishing this, photographer's only require better lighting to make the difference between standard photos and high grade photos.  We are going to be taking a look at some of the   techniques for beginners for different types of photography lighting methods. Understanding the measurement of light is the first step in beginning to understand photography lighting.

A primary purpose of a photography lighting system is to illuminate a subject to allow for and achieve a desired affect or to properly capture an image.High quality photos are produced through the use of various devices for lighting the home or studio, the results and impact of illuminating the subject whether a person or even a product in the shot can be seen almost immediately.

Photo lighting kits can be utilized to add light to an otherwise dull subject or image and make it come to life in a brilliant photo.Changing or controlling light or the lighting conditions if at all possible help photographer's create amazing photo's.On camera flash's, owner's find out relatively quickly generally do not lead to great photograph's. Not only are most flash's on standard camera's positioned in a place that's difficult to light up the subject, the brightness of the flash is too bright at close distances as well.

On camera flashes are also ineffective at lighting up things at a distance. Getting good photographs consistently as most photographer's know requires deliberately lighting what you are shooting with a quality light source .  Photographer’s utilize not only flash, but may often use a fluorescent photo lighting kit or one of three types of halogen lighting kits for the desired affect and outcome of their photos.  Both fluorescent and a halogen photo lighting create a continuous light source, where as flash simply follows it’s namesake and is thus not continuous lighting.Studio lighting or flash bulbs along with other types of artificial lighting can either help to minimize appearances of features or draw attention to them. Beginning photographer's may often find in using the on camera flash that the subjects end up with red eyes or harsh bursts of light.

Once you have proper photography lighting, it is important for the camera that you are using to be able to read shade. So your subject doesn't appear as a silhouette, you should try to focus the center of your frame to the shady are and not the bright spot behind a more darkly lit subject. You can both lesson and soften shadows caused by a light source with this practice.

Available natural lighting can produce very interesting patterns of light.Working with daylight as a photographer gives a great opportunity to capture many mood changing lighting conditions for a varied spread and quality of photographs.

Adobe Photoshop CS4 Review

There has never been a time in the history of digital photography software when we can achieve such great results in editing since we entered the digital age. There are so many tools available to us on computer and the Internet that allow us to enhance and change images and photos but none are better or more versatile than Adobe Photoshop.  This digital photographyhas become so synonymous with editing and creating effects that the term, “to Photoshop” has become a verb that means to enhance or alter an image.

We can “Photoshop in” new outfits, accessories or even people to a shot where it was just not possible before.  So if you want a picture of you shaking hands with the president, you don’t have to go to Washington to get it, just “Photoshop” your image into the image of the president and it will look as real as if you had been there.

If there is something in a picture you don't want to see anymore, you can "Photoshop" it out.If your picture has a glitch you can easily remove that physical flaw.  You can even remove a distracting person from the background of the shot. You can make alterations to images and not even be able to tell it because this digital photography editing software is so sophisticated.

Photoshop has become such a de facto standard for photo processing that if you are setting up a photography studio or business, a copy of the software is as necessary as Microsoft word or PowerPoint. This software is readily available and a lot of people know how to use it and that is good.  So if you feel insecure about learning yet another computer application, you can probably find a college student, someone at the high school or maybe the junior high that knows Photoshop in and out and can help you jump start your use of the software as well.

But Photoshop has not always dominated this genre.  The program was created in 1989 by two brothers, John Knoll and Thomas Knoll.the market became aware of the potential of this software shortly after the brothers created it for their person use.John and Thomas were pretty smart so the founded a company called Adobe in 1990.

Adobe has been a shining example of how to achieve success in the age of the Internet.I don't know of anyone today is not aware of Adobe. You would be hard pressed to find a computer today that doesn't have a copy of Adobe reader included in it.Another example of how this little company has taken over a particular market is found in a program format they own called PDF.

You need to find a copy to play with first to really become good at Adobe Photoshop. You usually can find Photoshop, like most computer applications, on someones computer that will allow you to play with the software a bit.  Then if your friend is a wizard at Photoshop, let him or her show you some of the real “wiz-bang” things they can do with Photoshop using the same menus you were just tinkering with.  This little Saturday afternoon experiment could turn you into a Photoshop addict forever.

When you are done you will need to download a copy for yourself. You can get and evaluation version to show what all the features of Photoshop are.  But you really only need that if you are not sure if you are going to buy a copy.Photoshop dominates this market so you will want to buy a copy but make sure you get a licensed copy to avoid some frustration.  Now, you will probably find yourself playing with the software for long hours just having fun and that’s great. There is value in taking some organized classes in Photoshop that you need not overlook. There are shortcuts you can use to get the most out of the software that these classes will show you.

If you really want to make photographs better for your friends and customers, then the only limit will be your imagination when using this software. You will be able to proudly proclaim, that's alright, I can fix that in Photoshop.".”

Vintage Pinup Girls

Innocent and tempting, arch and teasing, Bettie Page (1923-2008) stands out as the most iconic of all 1950’s pinup girls.  Bettie’s killer curves and sparkling eyes adored men’s magazines, advertisements, mail-order photographs, album covers from 1950 to 1957.

While her birth certificate reads "Betty Mae Page," "Bettie" is the form that she used since childhood, and can be seen on autographed merchandise from the 1990s and 2000s.  EBay sellers often hedge their bets by referring to her as “Bettie Betty Page in auction listings, furthering the confusion.

Asked for her opinion of modern pinup girls, Bettie has stated that Demi Moore’s celebrity impersonation bears little resemblance to her, and described Madonna as “highly overrated.”

Bettie Page has inspired many contemporary pinup artists, such as Jim Silke, Dave Stevens, and Olivia. I first encountered a fictionalized Bettie Page in Dave Stevens’ “Rocketeer” comic book serial in 1992. The unassuming primary fictional character Cliff Secord’s girlfriend Betty was modeled after Betty Page, who at time was known only to vintage pinup retro aficionados. Cliff’s rival for Betty’s affection, the gangly, bewhiskered, beret-wearing pin-up photographer, Irving, could not have been more dissimilar from the real-life Irving Klaw.

Throughout the 1940s, Irving Klaw and his sister Paula’s Manhattan-based Movie Star News had been enjoying a brisk business in movie stills, cheesecake photos, and pinups. Once Irving noticed the demand for damsel-in-distress movie stills surpass the supply, he began making his own bondage photos.  Paula did most of the photography, and tied the actual knots. To the disappointment of contemporary BDSM fanciers, neither the Klaws nor Bettie were into bondage.

The 1954 Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency headed by Estes Kefauver (the era’s Tipper Gore) attacked comic books and pornography, trying to linking them with juvenile delinquency. Klaw was subpoenaed and appeared in front of the Subcommittee on national TV, pleading the Fifth to every question. While Klaw’s bondage photographs did not involve nudity, his business was tarred by the connection with pornographic, sleazy pinups. Facing social, political, and legal pressures, Klaw retired from the trade. While Klaw attempted to burn all his negatives (succeeding with about 80%), his sister Paula preserved some of the better images, which are available today in collections of vintage pinups.

In 1954, Miami-based former model Bunny Yeager photographed Bettie decorating a Christmas tree, wearing only a Santa hat. Playboy magazine purchased it for their January 1955 issue, yielding one of their most memorable Christmas pinups. A former model herself, Bunny realized Bettie’s full potential as a female pinup model, capturing her as a beach bunny, a leopardskin-clad jungle queen (at the Africa USA wildlife park in Boca Raton), and sun goddess.

While Bettie’s religious rebirth on New Year’s Eve 1958 is typically named as the reason for her retirement from modeling, additional factors include the stigma of the Kefauver probe, a back injury, a blackmail attempt, using a fake hard-core photo, stalking incidents, and her advancing age.

Richard Foster’s 1997 book “The Real Bettie Page: The Truth about the Queen of the Pinups” indicates that Bettie’s religious fervour let loose personal demons she had handled during her professional life.

In the late 60s, the former pinup queen suffered violent mood swings, which doomed her marriage to Harry Lear, her third husband. Upset by the finalization of her divorce from Lear, Bettie was arrested for creating a public disturbance with a .22 pistol in Boca Raton. Although the marriage was over, Lear let Bettie to stay in his home with his three children. Some months afterward, Bettie paraded Lear and his three children at knife point before a picture of Jesus, commanding them, "If you take your eyes off this picture, I'll cut your guts out!” The incident resulted in a four-month stay in a state mental hospital. Generous to a fault, Lear allowed Bettie to return to his home, this time in an addition constructed for her.

In California in 1979, Bettie attacked an elderly couple with a breadknife, necessitating a year- long hospitalization. In 1982, Bettie stabbed her landlady 12 times. The trial for attempted murder resulted in her being ruled insane and institutionalized for ten years.

Bettie challenged the measure of time in mental health facilities, insisting “That book is full of lies. Richard Foster is the devil posing as a human. A monster.”
