New Zealand is an independent nation within
the British Commonwealth. The British Monarch, although constitutional head of
state, plays no active role in the administration of New Zealand's government.
The capital city is Wellington, although the largest city is Auckland, both
situated in the North Island. New Zealand has a population of 4 million and
being roughly the same size as Britain. It is a clean, green country with blue
seas and many deserted sandy beaches. There is a lot of unique flora and fauna
in New Zealand but it is mostly found in the countryside. In the cities, gardens
can be quite ‘English”. New Zealand is a bi-cultural society. The Maori, who
make up 9% of the population, are ‘lumped together’, but actually come from
different tribes throughout New Zealand, all with their own identity.Weather
forecasts in the summer show the “burn time”, or maximum time you can stay
unprotected in the sun. Everybody is encouraged to wear sun-hats and to use
suncream liberally. The clarity of light is noticeable and sun-glasses are a
must some days.
